Concert Choir
André Heywood, director | Jenya Trubnikava, accompanist
The Concert Choir comprises 39 of the most senior boys of the St. John's Boys' Choir and is the main touring and performing division. Boys in this ensemble have been involved in the organization for at least two years and pursue more challenging repertoire and learn more advanced vocal techniques. The group rehearses twice a week for 2 hours and studies theory as well. The group tours every year, with an international tour every other year.
Junior Varsity Choir
Brandon Nordhues, director | Sam Fujii, accompanist
The Junior Varsity Choir comprises boys in their second or third year in the St. John's Boys' Choir. In addition to their regular 2 hours of rehearsal, the 27 boys in this group spend an hour each week before rehearsal studying recorder, theory and taking voice lessons. Each year, the JV travels to a different US destination for a week.
Training Choir
Brandon Nordhues, director | Sam Fujii, accompanist
The Training Choir is made up of approximately 20 of the newest members of the St. John's Boys' Choir. Auditions are held during January with weekly two hour rehearsals beginning in February and running through the end of May. The primary goals of this choir are to develop a well supported, unison sound, to introduce the recorder and to become familiar with basic note reading and music theory. The Training Choir performs for the annual Donor Dinner and at area churches. In May, the boys graduate from the Training Choir and are invited into the Junior Varsity Choir.
Recorder Ensembles
Charlie Davisson, director
The recorder program consists of two auditioned ensembles for boys who have excelled in their recorder studies as members of the Training and Junior Varsity Choirs. Boys can first enter the Junior Recorder Ensemble to accomplish greater facility on the soprano recorder and to begin playing in two to three parts. Boys then advance to the Senior Recorder Ensemble which features a maximum of 8 boys on treble/descant, alto, tenor and bass recorders. Both ensembles rehearse for 45 minutes each week and perform at various liturgies and concerts.
